Cisco’s association with Akshaya Patra

Excerpts from an interview with Mr. V. Gopalratnam, VP IT and CIO Cisco India regarding Cisco’s association with Akshaya Patra.
Mr. V. Gopalratnam heads the Civic Council at Cisco India and it is under his leadership that the Cisco India community is working on social initiatives focused on strengthening communities and having a positive impact on them.
Q) How has CISCO involved/associated with Akshayapatra?
A) Cisco partners with Akshaypatra for the Global Hunger Relief campaign. The Global Hunger Relief campaign was launched in 2001 by Cisco globally. Every year since then, Cisco has united to provide donations to the world’s bes hunger relief organisations. In India, our exclusive partner is Akshaypatra. Our focus is on the Feted a Child program for government school children – run by Akshaypatra. We raise funds for them so they can continue their Mid Day Meals feeding program in government schools across Karnataka.
In this way, Cisco is indirectly having a positive impact on children’s education – as this program acts as a great incentive for under-privileged kids to attend school.
In Cisco, the Global Hunger relief campaign runs every year in months of November and December – globally, where employees and teams are encouraged to contribute toward charity. Each employee contribution is matched by Cisco Foundation as well as the John Morgridge Foundation (John Morgridge is Cisco’s Chairman of the Board Emeritus) – affectively tripling the amount of money that is contributed to the chosen charities.
Q) How long has been the association?
A) Cisco’s association with Akshaypatra has been consistent for 3 yrs, since 2007.
In the first year, Cisco employees contributed enough funds to feed 10,000 children in government schools for an entire year, in the second year we contributed toward feeding 20,000 school children and for the current year we are being able to feed 30,000 school children through Akshaypatra’s Mid Day Meals program.
Q) What kind of funding has been provided by CISCO to the organisation? As in, has CISCO helped with providing transportation/ machinery etc to the institution?
A) In 2007/08, Cisco employees contributed enough funds to feed 10,000 children in government schools for an entire year, in 2008/09 we contributed toward feeding 20,000 school children and for the current year we are being able to feed 30,000 school children through Akshaypatra’s Mid Day Meals program. Cisco’s efforts with Akshaypatra is focused on sponsoring the Feed a Child program also known as the Mid Day Meals program in government schools. In some cases, the government schools that we want to sponsor are actually identified by Cisco, but the bulk of the schools are Akshaypatra associated.
Q) What kind of programmes has CISCO and Akshayapatra jointly executed for the children?
A) Our focus is on the Feed a Child program for government school children – run by Akshaypatra, also known as the Mid Day Meals Program.
We also involve Akshaypatra in our own efforts – led by Cisco volunteers. Last year our volunteers identified 6 schools around the Cisco campus area, here in Bangalore. We conducted summer camps in these government schools, teaching basic hygiene and health related subjects. We provided mid day meals during the summer vacations when the schools were not in session – and this was done in association with Akshaypatra.
This year we will also feed school kids in government schools based in Raichur district, which is the area affected by devastating floods – in association with Akshaypatra. At this point, this project – called Project Samudaya- is a work in progress with the organization.
Q) Has CISCO helped with provide educational support to the children who come to the NGO?
A) Cisco volunteers work in the health and education areas for the underprivileged where we conducted summer camps in these government schools, teaching basic hygiene and health related subjects. We also involve Akshaypatra in these efforts – led by Cisco volunteers. Last year our volunteers identified 6 schools around the Cisco campus area, here in Bangalore. We provided mid day meals during the summer vacations when the schools were not in session – and this was done in association with Akshaypatra.
This year we will also feed school kids in government schools based in Raichur district, which is the area affected by devastating floods – in association with Akshaypatra. At this point, this project is a work in progress with the organization.
Q) What are the future plans with Akshayapatra?
A) With Akshaypatra, we hope to have a long term association. We will continue to support them as a part of Cisco’s Global Hunger Relief Program.
We are now working with Akshaypatra on a Cisco project, called Project Samudaya. These philanthropic efforts are aimed toward the flood affected areas of Northern Karnataka – specifically Raichur district. Cisco has committed $10 million toward rehabilitating 4 villages in that area. We are working with Akshaypatra to feed school kids in government schools based in Raichur district.
Q) Has CISCO collaborated with the NGO outside Karnataka?
A) Cisco has made many efforts in collaborating – through technology, and otherwise - for philanthropic reasons with NGOs and educational institutions across India.
Firstly – as an initiative of the India Civic Council, Cisco has a technology oriented program with educational institutions – the Cisco Networking Academy program – created for deserving and under privileged students. The whole technology setup has been donated by Cisco to the education institutions. The basic curriculum of this program is free of cost. It is currently being offered in 24 states and 107 tier 3 cities across India.
Next - Cisco has an MoU with the Government of Rajasthan for the Cisco Networking Academy initiative for marginalized students below the poverty line.
Next – Cisco has a technology initiative with a global NGO - One World, with presence in New Delhi. Cisco has donated a solution based on Cisco Unified Communications technology for rural areas. The service provides information to local farmers and population regarding agriculture and life-stock queries. The local population can come to the UC equipment powered centers to seek answers from subject matter experts across the country. This service is provided by One World Inc. in local languages and is currently available across 4 states in India.
Next – Cisco is actively involved with NGOs by providing technology solutions in Andhra Pradesh to the Dr. Reddy Foundation for education of marginalized children and also in Calcutta with Unnatti, an NGO involved in teaching deaf children.
Finally, our employees are associated at the local level with charities in different parts of the country- with Make a Wish Foundation for terminally ill children, New Delhi based Arya orphanage, and other local charities.

The Blue Bus- the carrier of happiness

The Blue Bus …the only one of its kind vehicle with which people identifies The Akshaya Patra Foundation. The Blue bus travels to 7,110 schools and helps us reach out to 11, 98,206 children across India with the hot, nutritious and tasty food inside. It is the bus of hope for the million of hungry children who are even denied of their basic needs otherwise.
The Bus is an integral part of the success story of Akshaya Patra school meal program today. The vehicle is heat insulated to ensure that the food remains hot when it is delivered to the schools. Each vehicle can cater to about 3,000 to 5,000 children. Cooked food is packed into stainless steel containers and loaded into these custom- built vehicles, which have racks to store the containers in an orderly manner.
Using a fleet of vehicles, food is transported to the schools within a 50 km radius of the kitchen. Security personnel escort each vehicle to ensure safe delivery of meals to the schools. The vehicles drop off the meals in the schools (about 20 to 25 schools per vehicle) and on their return trip pick up empty containers. The mapping of the schools to the vehicles has also been done efficiently so that food is delivered on time, six days of the week, without fail. The Blue Bus takes equal care in serving the food as our mother does at home.
We dream of the day when this Blue Bus reaches each and every hungry child in every corner of our country.

Akshaya Patra pledges to GO GREEN…on the occasion of WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Akshaya Patra Foundation, the largest school meal program feeding more than 1.2 million children every day with the aim to eliminate poverty and hunger has also established themselves in the field of innovation and technology. On the occasion of World Environment Day, The Akshaya Patra Foundation has taken another leaning step in serving the society and its natural resources by taking eco friendly initiatives to conserve the energy resources and thereby create a better ecological environment.   The proposed task include –
Use of Briquette run boilers instead of diesel run boilers, wherein the briquettes are made out of groundnut husk or rice bran(bi products of the cooking oil industry), thereby saving on 788.95MT of carbon and reduce our carbon foot print to an enormous extent.
Adopted standardization of vessel washing technique, whereby they were able to recycle more than 50% of consumed water. The Akshaya Patra Foundation has come up with this initiative of standardization of vessel washing so that they could save up lot of water and also recycle consumed water to reuse again.
These efforts would surely mark a positive contribution towards our Mother Earth.
Akshaya Patra Foundation works towards sustainable development and believes that with the effective and efficient use of technology we can remove hunger and poverty and make this planet a better place for our children to live in.

Thank you BOSCH for ensuring their meal

BOSCH the world's largest supplier of automobile components has been supporting the cause of The Akshaya Patra Foundation as a part of their corporate social responsibilities all these days. Lately the company wanted its employees to join this movement and contribute towards it.
Mr. Prabhakar, Ms. Usha & Dr. Raghavan, part of CSR initiative decided to design an employee engagement program where the employees would volunteer to adopt a school for the feeding program. The objective was to encourage the employees to personally involve and take the initiative to support the cause they believe in.
Soon after the message reached the employees, a highly enthusiastic team of five people led by Mr. Prabhakar registered themselves as champions and took up the responsibility of creating a buzz about Akshaya Patra among their fellow colleagues. In next few days 22 more employees joined the program and came in to volunteer for Akshaya Patra. Within a very short span of two weeks the number shot up to 180 volunteers. Each volunteer multiplied to the power of ten every day, making the program stronger with each passing sunlight hours. The volunteers drove the program within the company and started collecting donation from employees who wanted to contribute towards the cause. The initiative taken by the staff of BOSCH Automotive inspired BOSCH Software employees to participate in the program and volunteer for The Akshaya Patra Foundation.
This great initiative was marked by a program in Munichannappa Government Primary School at Adugodi organized by volunteers from BOSCH. Mr. Bhattacharya, Vice President BOSCH addressed the children saying that he wants them to be equally competitive as students in any other elite schools and make a remarkable career in future. Mr. Shridhar Venkat, Executive Director of The Akshaya Patra Foundation also spoke to the children asking them to dream big. He added that the nutritious food served by Akshaya Patra will always help them to chase their dream with strength and conviction and make them come true. The program ended with Mr. Bhattacharya handing over the donations collected by BOSCH employees (Volunteers) to Mr. Shridhar Venkat.
The employees of BOSCH have set an example for professionals in different corporate who wants to contribute towards a cause but their hectic schedule holds them back.

Bloggers Throng ‘City of Joy’ for Akshaya Patra

Kolkata Indiblogger meet On a sunny morning of Sunday, a community of bloggers from the city of joy woke up to gather around for a cause. A cause focused at feeding 5 million under-privileged children by the end of this decade. Over 100 bloggers from Kolkata and around trickled in to support Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world’s largest NGO-run school mid day meal programme in continuing their magical endeavour of feeding almost 1.3 million kids across 18 locations in India. An initial attempt by this community of internet enthusiasts was to put their voice into words, not by typing on a computer screen, but by using spray paint onto a huge plain white graffiti board placed on the stage. One of the messages, loud and clear was “Get them out of jobs… Get them into schools”. The gathering consisted of bloggers from diversified fields. Some wrote personal blogs while the others focused on technical developments. A few others seemed to have passion in art and literature. However each one present had a common fervor…a common cause to support Akshaya Patra and help the foundation to reach out and fight hunger and poverty.
IndiBlogger. In, a community of 25,000 Indian bloggers spread across the world, brought together over 100 members of their community. A huge contribution concealed in a non-contemporary fashion as the core objective of IndiBlogger. In is to understand, measure and promote the Indian blogging culture and thereby bringing the community to blog for a noble cause.
Kolkata Indiblogger meet The platform for the Indiblogger meet in Kolkata was firmly set by Infinity Infotech Parks Ltd, a collaboration of great minds who have helped Akshaya Patra in walking an extra mile in the journey so far. Mr. Pulak Chamaria, President and Executive Director of Infinity graced the occasion with his presence. “Communities such as these coming together to support the vision of Akshaya Patra Foundation is overwhelming” he said. Mr. Suparno Moitra, Regional Manager, NASSCOM, who has been a well-wisher of Akshaya Patra also spoke on the occasion and said “It is each one of our responsibility to go back home and get at least 2 supporters for Akshaya Patra which would help in increasing the supporter base for Akshaya Patra”.

Kolkata Indiblogger meetAn inspiring video of a speech delivered by Mr. N R Narayan Murthy, Founder-Chairman of Infosys Technologies Ltd engaged the audience and provided them with more insight about the Foundation. Interactive activities as a part of the half-day event encouraged several bloggers to be enthusiastic of volunteering for Akshaya Patra. “I am very excited about volunteering for Akshaya Patra. I would go back home and write blogs about the good work being done by the foundation” said one of the bloggers who attended the meet.
The event concluded with a flavor of music revolving around children by ‘Five Little Indians’ a popular rock band in Kolkata.

‘A rupee a day’ to feed more children

A rupee a dayIt is not about huge donations or big investments but a minimum help from all of us for somebody who needs it more, believed students of the Institute of Public Enterprise, Hyderabad. As part of the study programme the students were required to prepare a business plan and execute it. The goal of the project was to make a profit of minimum Rs. 1. For this project, students were divided into groups and each group came up with unique ideas on different ventures where they can earn a profit of at least one rupee a day. Every idea the group expressed was worth executing it and indeed profitable.
A rupee a day The students however did not stop at this, and extended the one rupee profit project to a social cause campaign by naming it as “A Rupee A Day” by which each student in the college contributed collectively a rupee a day, for a week, Also the campaign’s aim was to educate and endorse the importance of individual social responsibilities among future managers, End of one week they raised a sum of Rs. 5000 from 300 students and decided to hand it over to Akshaya Patra to feed more children.” 'TAPF, with no self motive' has unremittingly dedicated its efforts to serve a great purpose and we feel privileged to have been able to be a part of this wonderful mission.” Says Ravi Shah, one of the team members of the ‘A Rupee a Day’ team
